Celebrating Diwali at the Two Cities

Join the Two Cities' Association for a wonderful evening celebrating the festival of Diwali.

The Cities of London & Westminster Conservatives invite you to join The Rt Hon Priti Patel MP, former Home Secretary, to a Diwali celebration with food, wine and live music at a prestigious location in central London. We are planning the first of what we intend to be an annual event in celebration of Diwali. Other distinguished guests will include Nickie Aiken, Member of Parliament for the Cities of London & Westminster, Deputy Chairman of the Conservative Party and Gagan Mohindra, Member of Parliament for South West Hertfordshire.

We would be delighted if you would join us for our inaugural "Festival of Lights" celebration. The dinner will have excellent traditional north Indian food from one of London's finest Indian hotels. Guests will also be treated to Bhangra dancing and music for entertainment. The Prosecco reception will take place from 6:45 until 7:30 pm, with dinner being served from 7:30 pm. Wines and soft drinks will be available.

It is our pleasure to announce that former Home Secretary, The Rt Hon Priti Patel MP, will be attending the event as guest of honour. Priti has served with distinction across several different governments in recent years. She is also a proud member of the Hindu community.

The event will take place from 6:45 pm on Tuesday 1st November.

Rt Hon Priti Patel MP

Former Home Secretary

Priti was born in London to parents who are Ugandan immigrants of Gujarati ancestry, and who had fled to the UK because of the persecution of Indians in Uganda under Idi Amin’s regime.

She attended a comprehensive school in Watford before going on to study economics at Keele University, and to study British Government and Politics at the University of Essex. While in university, she interned for the Conservative Party’s research department, and after graduating, served as the Press Secretary for the then Leader of the Opposition William Hague.

In November 2006, she was selected to represent the Conservative Party for the newly-created Witham Parliamentary constituency, which she went to win at the 2010 General Election with a majority of over 15,000 votes and was subsequently re-elected in the 2015, 2017 and 2019 general elections.

Priti has held a number of positions in Government, including as the Exchequer Secretary to the Treasury (2014-2015) and Minister of State for Employment at the Department for Work and Pensions (2015-2016). She served as Secretary of State for International Development between July 2016 and November 2017, and held the post of Home Secretary between July 2019 and September 2022. During her time as Home Secretary, Priti oversaw significant reform of the immigration system, and delivered record investment into the policing services.

Alongside her Ministerial positions, Priti was also appointed as the first ever Prime Minister’s UK India Diaspora Champion in 2013. In this role, she worked towards the of deepening UK-India trade, education and cultural links and promoting contact between Indians in both countries.

Gagan Mohindra MP

Gagan was elected as the new MP for South West Hertfordshire in 2019. He previously served in local government both as a District Councillor for Epping and County Councillor for Essex.

In June 2022, Gagan was appointed Parliamentary Private Secretary to the Home Secretary.
