The Two Cities has a considerable Jewish History. So our MP for the Cities of London & Westminster, Nickie Aiken, was delighted to take part in the Jewish History Trail, led by Marcus Roberts, Director of Jewish Heritage Trails and joined by Rabbi Morris of Bevis Marks Synagogue.
Taking in the Medieval Jewish Cemetery, they also stopped by a site once believed to have an underground Mikveh - a bath used for ritual immersion in Judaism to achieve ritual purity.
Further stops on the tour included Bevis Marks Synagogue - the oldest synagogue in the UK - the Great Synagogue which stood until 1272, and Nickie heard more about the Jewish community's contribution to the early Bank of England.
Commenting following the tour, Nickie explained,
I think it is important that we remind ourselves of the remarkable contribution our Jewish community has made across our society and I am continuing to make the case with Government to establish a British Jewish History Month.
