Cities of London & Westminster MP, Nickie Aiken, is delighted that the Government has agreed to save several gas lamps in Westminster thanks to The London Gasketeers' campaign which she has been proud to support.
The four historic gas lamps in Russell Street in Covent Garden have now been listed.
These lampposts are part of a collection installed around Covent Garden in 1910 to mark the beginning of George V's reign.
They have been listed as Grade II as a result of a pilot project by Historic England to help inform ongoing discussions about the management of gas lamps in Westminster and beyond. Historic England is continuing to survey dozens of other gas lamps across Westminster. Further listings should hopefully follow over the coming months.
Gas lamps are a part of our heritage. Nickie is delighted to have worked with local people and The London Gasketeers to make the case with the Department for Culture, Media, and Sport as well as Historic England to protect them. Nickie joined Lord Parkinson, The London Gasketeers, and a group of gas lighters and local people including actor Simon Callow to celebrate the news!
