Joint action by local Councillors has resulted in Transport for London withdrawing controversial plans to route a “Cycle Super- Highway” along Vauxhall Bridge Road. As a result of the new cycle lanes, which would have been painted the same garish blue seen in Grosvenor Road, motor traffic along Vauxhall Bridge Road would have been restricted to just one lane in each direction .

Taken together with priority to be given to cyclists at traffic lights, this would have resulted in massive congestion and long queues at traffic lights all along Vauxhall Bridge Road. Councillor Alan Bradley, who co-ordinated the joint response by councillors in the three wards bordering on Vauxhall Bridge Road  commented: “We support measures to improve the experience for cyclists in London, and enhance their safety, but not where the result is as bad as it would have been in Vauxhall Bridge Road.

The congestion would have been so great that many motorists would have sought to avoid it by rat-running through quiet residential streets. Nor is it very pleasant for cyclists to have to ride through the fumes resulting from so many stationary vehicles.”
As a result of your Councillors’ cogent arguments, Transport for London have announced that they will re-think the whole proposal. Any new proposal will, once again, be scrutinised in detail by your local Councillors.
