There are few public services as important as the police. They keep us and our city safe. Commenting on policing, West Central Assembly Member Tony Devenish said, “I welcome the Home Secretary’s commitment to recruit an additional 20,000 police officers. It’s imperative that we boost the number of officers in London and allocated them to the boroughs which need them most.”
While the number of police officers is immensely important, the way in which they are used is also extremely relevant. On a local level, we need to have more bobbies on the beat. Not only do they reassure locals but they are also a proven way of reducing crime.
Increasing local policing is an essential in our fight against crime. We must ensure that we get more police officers on our city’s street. Visible policing deters crime and boost local peoples’ sense of security.
Tony added that, “I also believe that special constables can play an invaluable part in keeping our city safe.” Special constables, who are essentially volunteer police officers, can provide an additional layer of security for our communities. We need to encourage their recruitment and retention alongside that of regular police officers.
Effective local policing should lie at the heart of any strategy to make our city a safer and more peaceful place. Our city deserves more local policing.
