Our outstanding GLA colleague and Conservative Mayoral candidate Shaun Bailey, has launched a petition against Sadiq Khan’s congestion charge expansion.
The Labour Mayor of London Sadiq Khan has decided to increase Congestion Charge to £15 a day and expand it to 7 days a week, from 7am until 10pm. These changes will come into effect on 22 June 2020.
Tony Devenish said, “I agree with Shaun that ‘now is the time to be supporting London's businesses, not raising taxes on them’. Now, more than ever, we have got to focus on rebuilding our economy and helping businesses get back to work.”
“Shaun is right, it is time to back our city, not burden it with an increased congestion charge. The Mayor’s expansion of congestion charge is badly timed. It will negatively affect many whose finances are already under pressure due to Coronavirus.”
New people moving into the congestion charge zone will be unable to claim a resident discount and essential public workers such as police officers, fire-fighters and teachers will not be exempt from the increased charge. In addition, those attending religious services on a Sunday will now be subject to congestion charge as well.
Tony added, “I strongly believe that what London needs is assistance and relief. We must continue to support to our local people and businesses so that they can weather the crisis we are facing. We have got to act in our city’s best interest and oppose the Mayor’s inappropriate and harmful congestion charge expansion.”
