Conservative Assembly Member and 2021 Mayoral candidate Shaun Bailey has written an article on the solution to London’s housing shortage. In a substantive and insightful piece in City AM, Shaun outlines our city’s housing problem and how we can best solve it. Shaun highlights the Mayor’s consideration of harmful rent controls.
Commenting on Shaun’s article Tony Devenish West Central Assembly Member stated, “Shaun is absolutely right. Our city has an acute housing shortfall and it is clear that the Mayor is unwilling to effectively address the issue. Shaun has a well-reasoned plan of action to tackle this ever-increasing problem. It is time we had a Mayor who acts decisively to build the new homes local people require. Vote for Shaun in May.”
The Mayor has been considering the use of rent control to ensure that privately rented housing remains affordable to locals. Such intervention could be highly damaging. Tony added, “There is no need to excessively intervene in private housing, what we need is more housing, not more highly regulated housing. Local people need more affordable homes and the Mayor must take such needs seriously. He must get on with the job of providing housing for London and using the £4.82 billion given to him by the government.”
