The Ultra Low emissions Zone (ULEZ) was championed by Conservative Mayor Boris Johnson. However, Johnson realised that people and business needed to time to adjust to the changes ULEZ would bring. He intended to have ULEZ introduced by September 2020 to give all affected by it time to adapt.
The current Mayor rushed the instruction of ULEZ and has now brought it forward by 17 months. ULEZ goes into effect now and will cause untold disruption as local people and others have not had sufficient time to prepare for the adjustment.
While air quality is a paramount concern for all locals, the introduction of ULEZ must be done fairly. The disruption ULEZ will cause must be minimised by giving people enough time.
Commenting on the introduction of ULEZ Tony Devenish, Assembly Member for West Central stated, “The Mayor has brought ULEZ forward only so that he is able to get some cheap headlines and raise some extra money. His decision to rush ULEZ’s introduction will negatively impact our city and many local people. The Mayor is not acting in the best interests of London and I call on him to reconsider his decision.”
