The Two Cities has such a profound LGBT+ history, and in the House of Commons today, Nickie Aiken, Member of Parliament for the Cities of London & Westminster, was privileged to highlight that distinguished history and champion how far we have come as a country in welcoming LGBT+ people as valued and respected members of our society.
From hosting the first UK Pride march in 1972, to the 80s and the groundbreaking trials at St Mary’s to change the course of HIV treatment and research. Or turning to Parliament 20 years ago when it voted to allow gay people to adopt. And ten years ago with same-sex marriage at long last allowed, ensuring gay people were finally treated as equals. We have come so far.
Nickie spoke to activist and campaigner Philip Baldwin for her upcoming podcast and heard about his diagnosis of HIV and hepatitis C at aged 24. But because of medical advances, his HIV status is no longer a life sentence, and his hepatitis C has been cured.
But we can do more, and we must continue our phenomenal progress and ban conversion therapy.
Watch what Nickie had to say.
