On Thursday 7th February Westminster City Council and the Metropolitan Police held a joint public meeting at the Churchill Gardens Hall to discuss community safety. Over 200 residents came to raise their concerns, ask questions, and hear what action the council and police are taking. Here is an update on the issues that were covered:
- Ongoing Investigation
Two people have been charged in relation to the recent murder of Hani Abou El Kheir, and the investigation continues.
- Extra Police patrols
Councillors said the police needed to come down on drug dealing in Pimlico “like a ton of bricks.” In particular, extra patrols are needed at night. Borough Commander Alison Newcomb spoke about the work already being done, promised to do whatever she could, and to make sure police were on hand when needed. Kids cannot be allowed deal drugs and make residents’ lives a misery.
- Action to prevent drug and gang crime
Residents agreed that this is a London-wide problem, with young people coming from outside the area to cause trouble. The police and city council were using their city-wide networks to counter this, and taking targeted action to keep Pimlico children safe. For example, the Your Choice programme works with our young people to keep them out of trouble. Visit the Your Choice Roadshow at Johnson’s place this Saturday until 4pm, or call 0207 641 4000 to find out more.
- Constructive activities for young people
There was a very strong feeling that the vast majority of young people in Pimlico are good kids, and asked the city council to ensure people were made aware of what’s on offer for them locally. To find out more, visit www.westminster.gov.uk.
Pimlico is a great place to live. We will not let a minority spoil it.
