James was elected Chairman of the Cities of London & Westminster Conservative Association in June 2022. He was elected Treasurer in September 2023.

From May 2018 until May 2022, James served as a Westminster City Councillor, representing the former Tachbrook ward which covered part of Pimlico. He was Cabinet Member for City Management.
